BIRMINGHAM—A quiet morning in the 100 block of 24th Avenue South turned tragic on Saturday, October 19, 2024, when a man was found shot to death in the street. The unsettling discovery shook the residents of the neighborhood, located just off the busy Green Springs Highway.
According to Birmingham Police, officers received the call around 6:30 a.m. and quickly arrived at the scene. They found the man unresponsive, and medics pronounced him dead shortly afterward. Sgt. Bryan Shelton of the Birmingham Police Department confirmed the initial findings and noted that there was an immediate investigation underway.
Residents living nearby reported hearing commotion and gunshots just prior to the police arriving. Many expressed shock and sorrow at the event, bringing into question the safety of their once peaceful neighborhood. “It’s really upsetting to see something like this happen here,” said a resident who wished to remain anonymous. “This street used to be so quiet.”
As the investigation progresses, authorities have not made any arrests and are keeping details under wraps. “It’s early in the investigation and we do not have a motive,” said Sgt. Shelton. He emphasized the tragedy of any homicide, extending condolences to the family of the deceased. Shelton added, “Our investigators will work to try to bring some closure to the family.”
This incident marks the 131st homicide in the city this year. Within the broader Jefferson County area, the homicide count stands at a disturbing 165 cases, reflecting a troubling trend in violence across the region. Of the 131 cases in Birmingham, nine have been ruled justifiable, while two other victims were fatally harmed in prior years.
