Birmingham’s Nhung Le: A Beacon of Hope and Service in the Community

Birmingham’s Community Hero: Nhung Le’s Journey of Service

In the heart of Birmingham, a remarkable young woman is making waves in her community through her dedication and passion for helping others. Meet Nhung Le, a first-generation college graduate who wears many hats, all while radiating warmth and compassion. With her two little sisters often in mind, Nhung finds joy in beautiful places like the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and holds a deep commitment to improving her community through the role she cherishes at the United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA).

A Homegrown Talent and Advocate

Born and raised in Birmingham, Nhung’s journey reflects her family’s rich history and determination. Her mother emigrated from Vietnam in the 1980s, paving the way for a brighter future. Nhung followed her dreams, earning her bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Now, she’s back at her old stomping grounds, headed towards her master’s in social work, demonstrating that her roots deeply intertwine with her ambitions.

The Heart of the Matter: Serving Those in Need

In 2021, after graduating, Nhung secured a job with the United Way Area Agency on Aging (UWAAA). Here, she thrives as a Call Specialist within the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC). This center is a lifeline for seniors and individuals with disabilities in Jefferson County, providing essential information, counseling, and referrals to various assistance programs. Nhung’s love for her role shines through when she shares, “I really am happy to work with the Area Agency on Aging at United Way, because they serve my community.”

Making Language Accessible for All

But Nhung’s impact doesn’t stop there. She is also at the forefront of the language access subcommittee for the organization’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee. “I’m passionate about other people having access to language services and programs, especially if they’re looking for government assistance,” she explains. “That’s complicated to go through, and a lot of people have limited English-speaking abilities.” Her heart for service and commitment to ensuring everyone gets the help they need is truly admirable.

A Supportive Work Environment

When asked about her experience working with UWDCA, Nhung lights up reminiscing about her amazing coworkers and mentors. “The people here are like family. I have opportunities to chat with others and collaborate with them. I meet with my mentor quarterly and talk about goals I want to develop,” she reveals. Working in an entry-level position as a specialist, Nhung finds herself surrounded by support and encouragement that fuels her aspirations for growth. “I hope to grow into management, and they’re already teaching me how to become management material.” Her appreciation for her supervisors’ caring approach makes her job feel more manageable, turning challenges into opportunities for learning.

A Call to Community Spirit

As Nhung’s story illustrates, there is a bright light emerging in Birmingham through dedicated individuals like her who genuinely care about their community. She emphasizes the importance of wanting to make a difference and encourages others to consider working in similar environments. “Work for an organization that makes a difference,” she urges. If you have a heart for service, perhaps it’s time for you to dive in and explore the enriching work opportunities available at organizations like UWCA.

In conclusion, Nhung Le embodies the spirit of service and community commitment. Her journey from student to advocate serves as a reminder that with a little love and a lot of hard work, anyone can help make their community a better place. Birmingham is better off with her in it!
