Hey there, Birmingham! Exciting news is brewing in our city as the Birmingham City Council has officially announced their much-anticipated appointments for the Water Works Board. With terms for all nine seats expiring soon, changes were inevitable, and the council jumped right in to fill the gaps.
Among the recently announced reappointments are the dedicated Tereshia Huffman and Larry Ward, who currently serve as the board’s chairwoman and secretary-treasurer, respectively. Their experience and commitment have made them invaluable assets on the board, and it’s clear the council appreciates what they bring to the table!
But that’s not all! The council is also ushering in some fresh faces. Jonathan Harris will be stepping in to fill the spot left by the late Ronald Mims. Harris comes with a wealth of experience from his time as a retired water works treatment manager. It’s a bittersweet transition, but the board is glad to have someone with Harris’s expertise on board.
Meanwhile, Ivan Holloway is set to replace George Munchus, who has reached his term limit. Holloway is an executive director at Urban Impact and has a background in real estate development—a combination that should provide a fresh perspective to the board’s efforts!
As part of the appointing process, the mayor also has a say! Dr. Andre McShan and Dr. Monique Gardner Witherspoon are the chosen ones for the mayor’s two appointments. Dr. Gardner Witherspoon is currently making waves as the associate dean and professor at the Orlean Beeson School of Education at Samford University, while Dr. McShan serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UAB. With these two illustrious doctors joining the board, Birmingham can expect insightful contributions, especially in areas relating to health and community well-being.
All of these appointments will officially kick off on January 1st, 2025, with the newly appointed members serving their terms through December 31st, 2028. This strategic planning should keep Birmingham’s water services running smoothly while paving the way for improvements that local residents can look forward to.
Birmingham councilor Hunter Williams has assured the public that we’re in for “continued improvements.” With a clear commitment to both maintaining and enhancing our water services, it sounds like exciting times are ahead for Birmingham!
Let’s not forget that our neighboring counties— Shelby, Blount, and Jefferson—are also set to appoint one seat each on the Water Works Board. As of now, however, those names remain under wraps. We’ll keep our ears to the ground and let you know as soon as they announce their picks!
So, Birmingham, let’s raise a glass of our precious water—complete with all the improvements on the horizon! The Birmingham Water Works Board is gearing up for an exciting future with a team that’s committed to making our water services top-notch. Stay tuned for more updates as we keep you informed every step of the way!
