Birmingham Celebrates Black History Month with Exciting Events

As February rolls in, Birmingham is gearing up for a vibrant month filled with celebrations and reflections in honor of Black History Month! The city is buzzing with activities aimed at honoring and recognizing the rich contributions of African Americans throughout history. From art exhibits to informative talks, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

Lawson State Community College: A Day Filled with History

Mark your calendars for Wednesday! Lawson State Community College is hosting a special Black History Month Program from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Perry Ward Alabama Center for Advanced Technology & Training on the Birmingham Campus. This event promises to be enlightening, featuring an introductory gallery themed “An African American Mosaic of History, Labor, Education, and Art.” This gallery will showcase an array of artifacts and reclaimed objects that tell the stories of diverse cultural and historical experiences.

The program will also feature guest speaker Mr. R. D. Burrell, who will delve into the remarkable story of his great-grandfather, Andrew Jackson Beard. Beard was instrumental in revolutionizing railroad car technology, and his legacy continues to impact the industry today. In addition, Mr. Philip Howard will spotlight the incredible legacy of Attorney Arthur D. Shores, who not only represented Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. but also collaborated with the legendary Justice Thurgood Marshall. And to add a personal touch, Ms. Barbara Shores, Attorney Shores’ daughter and a talented author and artist, will be there to share her insights!

Exciting Events Throughout the City

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is also on board, announcing a series of events throughout February to celebrate Black History Month. Details can be found on their website, filled with opportunities for learning and reflection. Furthermore, the UAB’s Black Alumni Association is hosting a kickoff game on February 1 against the Charlotte 49ers. What better way to celebrate than cheering on your team?

Lunch and Learn Sessions

Are you ready for some fascinating stories? Dr. Lisa Bratton will present “The Tuskegee Airmen—In Their Own Words” at the Trussville Public Library as part of a lunch and learn event. It’s a chance to hear firsthand accounts from one of the most celebrated groups in American history. UAB will also be hosting Knocking at the Door discussions focused on the life and legacy of Dr. James Montgomery, who dedicated his life to fighting for healthcare access for Black residents.

Reflecting on History

There’s even a virtual event led by UAB and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute that explores the often-overlooked history of prison labor—definitely worth attending for those interested in a deeper understanding of social issues.

Quilting the Past

Here’s a unique opportunity for community involvement! The Jefferson County Memorial Quilt initiative is seeking participants to help create a quilt to honor the memory of the 33 African Americans who were lynched in Jefferson County. This impactful project will not only preserve history but also foster a sense of community solidarity.

Auditions and Scholarships

For younger folks with a flair for singing, the Birmingham Youth and Young Adult Fellowship Choir is holding auditions for individuals aged 10-28. It’s a fantastic chance to join a vibrant group and share your talent! Plus, the Jefferson County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is currently accepting applications for their annual scholarships until February 29. If you know a young scholar, spread the word!

More Fun Awaits

This month wouldn’t be complete without local festivities! The Birmingham Botanical Gardens will open registration for their BBG Summer Camps for children aged 4-12 on February 17. Don’t forget to check out various music venues and special performances for Valentine’s Day, including a lively show titled “Valentine Love featuring Abraham the Voice,” not to mention comedy shows that are bound to tickle your funny bone.

Lastly, be sure to visit the Birmingham Library, which will host art exhibits throughout February, including “Vessels of Possibility” and “Issues – Time.” It’s a perfect way to engage with the local art scene while learning more about relevant issues.

Birmingham is truly embracing the spirit of Black History Month, so whether you’re attending informative sessions, enjoying art, or participating in community events, there’s no shortage of ways to celebrate and reflect this February!
