Birmingham Gears Up for a Musical Celebration: Inspired by Alabama Concert
Excitement is building in Birmingham as the Alabama Symphony Orchestra (ASO) prepares for a special event that promises to be both historic and inspirational. On October 30, the ASO will host a unique concert titled Inspired by Alabama, during which an album of Alabama-composed works will be recorded live at the Alys Stephens Center.
A Celebration of Alabama’s Musical Legacy
This concert will showcase distinctive classical compositions by three Birmingham- and Alabama-centric composers, including a newly created symphonic piece by local talent Brian Raphael Nabors. The composition features four movements that offer an engaging auditory journey through Birmingham’s rich history and vibrant culture.
“This is a remarkable opportunity for our city,” said an ASO representative. “Recording an album of this magnitude, especially focusing on local compositions, shows not only our commitment to preserving classic music but also highlights the talent we have right here in Alabama.”
Notable Compositions on the Program
Among the remarkable pieces to be featured is a masterpiece by William Levi Dawson, which originally premiered in 1934 and received instantaneous acclaim. This composition is notable for its incorporation of choral octavos, drawing heavily from Black spirituals that are still widely performed in various church settings today. In a nod to its historical significance, the ASO was the second orchestra to play this piece and the first organization in the South to present it publicly in 1935.
Another highlight will be the iconic jazz standard Stars Fell on Alabama, which is cherished in our region. During the live concert, this piece will be specially arranged for the orchestra by Amerigo Marino. This arrangement promises to bring a fresh perspective to a song that holds a special place in the hearts of many Alabamians.
How You Can Get Involved
The ASO has put significant resources into ensuring that the Inspired by Alabama project is realized with top-tier recording standards. To support this significant endeavor, local music lovers are encouraged to participate by purchasing tickets for the concert or making donations to the ASO directly.
Tickets for the event can be secured through the ASO website, and attendees will not only enjoy an enriching musical experience but also contribute to preserving the legacy of classical music in Alabama for generations to come.
The Importance of the ASO
Did you know that the Alabama Symphony Orchestra is the only full-time orchestra in the state? Established over a century ago, it has played a pivotal role in shaping the local music scene and has been at the forefront of Alabama’s classical music heritage. Projects like Inspired by Alabama are crucial in highlighting the contributions of local composers and ensuring that their works reach a wider audience.
A Note from the ASO
The ASO invites everyone in the community to come out on October 30, support local artists, and enjoy an evening of exceptional music. It’s not just a concert; it’s a celebration of Alabama’s rich cultural tapestry and an opportunity to be part of something meaningful.
