Birmingham rose to prominence for its vibrant scene of renovated urban spaces, where defunct office buildings have been transformed into residential lofts and flats.
Across the country, the adoption of adaptive reuse practices for outdated buildings has seen a significant increase, with 17.6% more building conversions into apartments in 2023 compared to the previous year. RentCafe’s data indicate that about 151,000 new apartments are currently under renovation from outdated structures nationwide.
The spurring factors of this rise can be attributed to the high demand for housing due to the glides and slides in the post-pandemic real estate market.
