Community Rallies for BHM 26.2 Event to Support Local Families in Need

Community Gears Up for BHM 26.2 to Benefit Local Families

Birmingham, AL – This Sunday, October 6, people across Central Alabama will lace up their running shoes for the eagerly anticipated BHM 26.2 event at the Hoover Met. This annual charitable race offers participants a range of options, including a full marathon, half marathon, 10 miler, 10K, 5K, or a fun run, creating an inclusive environment for runners of all abilities. The proceeds from this event will directly benefit Magic Moments, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and families facing life-threatening or life-altering conditions.

A Special Cause

Magic Moments is unique in that it exclusively focuses on wish-granting for children in Alabama. The organization provides around 100 children each year with the chance to experience special moments, like visiting Walt Disney World, often in a time of distress during their treatment journeys. “They need something to look forward to other than hospital visits and doctor visits,” said Sandy Naramore, Executive Director of Magic Moments.

One inspiring story tied to the race is that of Eli Hairston, who was a typical teenager until a tragic golf cart accident in 2019 dramatically altered his life. “Overnight it changed and impacted him and his quality of life – our other children, my wife, myself. It impacted everything,” said Jay Hairston, Eli’s father. Eli spent 82 nights in the hospital, during which he had to relearn basic skills like talking and walking.

Running for a Greater Purpose

The Hairston family first got involved with Magic Moments after hearing about its mission to help families like theirs. In 2020, they participated in the 5K race together to support Eli and the organization. At the finish line, something incredible occurred. “As we got to the finish line, Eli said ‘I want to walk over – I don’t want to be pushed.’ We locked his chair in and guided him as he walked maybe 30 yards to cross the finish line – it was an opportunity for us to see that the motivated kid is still in there,” shared Jay.

After completing the race, Eli received his own magic moment—a trip to New York City. “It was awesome—just how far I’d come after the wheelchair,” Eli expressed. This event not only brought the family joy but also created beneficial memories during a challenging time. “Families know they’re not going through it alone. Their challenges are seen—people are there to help them and give them real, meaningful experiences,” Jay added.

Support Beyond the Wish

The assistance from Magic Moments doesn’t end with the wishes. Children can participate in programs and activities until the age of 19, ensuring ongoing support and connection. “The main thing is to keep them connected with other families who’ve experienced similar situations,” Naramore explained. “These families really become close and become each other’s resources and support.” Eli expressed gratitude for this sense of community, saying, “The community for Magic Moments is so welcoming, and they feel like family to us.”

A Day to Unite

This year’s BHM 26.2 promises to be more than just a running event; it aims to bring together runners and families connected with Magic Moments. “I feel like I can give them a little bit of hope for how far I’ve come to say, ‘Look—you’ve got this!’” Eli stated, reflecting on the spirit of the event.

Join the Effort

This Sunday, expect to see the community come together at the Hoover Met, with the collective goal of supporting children and families in need, proving once again that in Birmingham, we run not just for ourselves, but for each other.
