If you’ve been wondering how to escape the sweltering summer heat, we’ve got a valid solution for you. The IMAX Dome Theater at the McWane Science Center provides an immersive and refreshing respite from the high temperatures.
As one of the treasures of the McWane Science Center, the IMAX Dome Theater offers more than what meets the eye. We recently had an insightful conversation with Greg Stanford, the Director of IMAX, to unravel some intriguing, behind the scenes facts. Here are some things you should know about the McWane Science Center IMAX Dome Theatre.
In 2020, the IMAX Dome underwent significant renovations, replacing the original film projection system. The result? The installation of IMAX with Laser—offering high-definition images and superlative sound quality. This advance also allowed for a more varied display of digital content, ranging from documentaries to blockbuster films.
One of the most exciting facts we learned was that this is not only the only IMAX Laser system in Alabama but also the largest laser dome in the Southeast.
If you have had an opportunity to visit the IMAX Dome, you may have noticed a gray box sitting in the back of the theater. That’s home to the IMAX Laser projector and it’s known as “The Dog House.” It serves dual purposes—keeping the projector safe from guests and guests safe from the laser.
Did you know the IMAX projector undergoes a maintenance check each week? During this process, workers lower the projector from The Dog House, clean it, and ensure it’s in perfect working condition.
Sparrow AV, an audio-visual company founded in Birmingham in 2008, has a deep connection to the IMAX theater. Greg revealed that Sparrow AV installs 95% of the IMAX equipment across the U.S., including McWane’s IMAX Dome. They were even responsible for creating the IMAX pre-show that plays on the big screen before every film.
When Disney’s The Little Mermaid returned to the IMAX Dome in July 2023, it achieved monumental success. Greg stated that the film received such overwhelming response that it sold out tickets repeatedly, pulling in between 3,000-5,000 movie-goers. During that period, McWane’s IMAX won the number one spot for stand-alone theater with the highest number of ticket sales in the country.
