Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Hosts Summer Scholars Symposium
BIRMINGHAM – Summer Research Shines at Woolfolk Gallery
In a monumental step towards enhancing educational experiences for underserved youth, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) recently hosted the Summer Scholars Symposium at the Woolfolk Gallery. The event highlighted the scholarly work undertaken by students as part of the Legacy Youth Leadership, Legacy STEM Summer Enrichment, and IMLS Intersectional Fellowship programs.
Students’ Work Highlight Environmental Justice and Human Rights
The scholars’ showcased projects primarily focused on in-depth research in areas of environmental justice and human rights. This served to underline the BCRI’s emphasis on serious learning and research initiatives.
“This is serious work that we do here, not just as a museum but also as an institute,” said Samantha Elliott Briggs, a senior representative from the BCRI. “We want people to see that knowledge is year-round, that knowledge is cross-cultural. We want people to learn from the perspective of the students.”
Year-round Learning for Scholars
The research work displayed by the Scholars at the Symposium underscored the dedication, hard work, and intellectual grit of the students from various Legacy Youth Leadership and Enrichment programs. The research projects aimed to promote the importance and usefulness of relevant and contextual learning experiences. In turn, these efforts are designed to foster a culture of critical thinking and curiosity, creating a generation of informed citizens with a deep understanding of human rights and environmental justice issues.
