Birmingham is welcoming a vibrant new addition to its cultural landscape with the grand opening of 16th Cross Pearson Wearable Art Gallery. Established by local entrepreneur Tanya Pugh-Johnson, this gallery showcases the works of Black designers, artists, and stylists, filling a significant niche in the city. Officially opened in July 2024, it stands out as the first Black-owned wearable art gallery in Alabama.
At 46, Tanya Pugh-Johnson has channeled her passion for fashion and art into a creative space that reflects her commitment to uplifting local artists. The gallery came to life following a powerful vision she received in October 2023, characterized by the imagery of a platform and microphone. “It’ll never really be about me,” Pugh-Johnson shares, emphasizing her role as a vessel to showcase the talents of others. “God called me to uplift and shine a light on others so that they can be seen.”
Inside the gallery, visitors can find an array of local artwork ranging from the serene black and white acrylic pieces by artist A.Nichel to the bold, colorful jewelry crafted by Aaliyah Taylor. Models donning outfits by local fashion designers grace the windows, adding a dynamic, living advertisement to the storefront. Pugh-Johnson has been instrumental in assembling a roster of creatives, utilizing social media and community connections to gather artists.
Featured artists include Nikki Manning Huntley, Bradford Caddell, Pansey Nelson, Samuel Kane, and Allyson Ragland. Each featured creator enjoys a contract of 6 to 12 months to showcase their work at 16th Cross Pearson.
The gallery’s name has deep personal significance for Pugh-Johnson. It is inspired by her grandmothers; one lived on 16th Street in Fountain Heights and the other on Pearson Avenue in West End. Pugh-Johnson reminisces about her childhood, seated on her grandmother’s stoop, waiting for her to return home from work. “It was like an angel was walking toward me,” she reflects, emphasizing the nurturing and resilient spirit that her grandmother represented.
Pugh-Johnson has always harbored an entrepreneurial spirit. After leaving her banking job in 2019, she experimented with a marketing agency, yet the call to pursue her vision for a wearable art gallery proved irresistible. A significant turning point occurred when she presented her idea to her aunt, who provided the necessary funding, believing in Pugh-Johnson’s vision wholeheartedly.
Despite challenges, such as securing a suitable location, Pugh-Johnson’s determination led her to a prime spot on 1st Avenue. The gallery officially opened its doors just a month and a half later, marking a triumphant milestone in her entrepreneurial journey.
Pugh-Johnson’s vision for 16th Cross Pearson also emphasizes community partnerships. She collaborates with local nonprofits, such as The Flourish Alabama, which supports young artists, providing a platform for their creativity. The gallery hosts T-shirts designed by Birmingham City students, ensuring access to unique works.
“Everything we showcase here is one of a kind. You won’t find these pieces anywhere else,” Pugh-Johnson asserts, highlighting the gallery’s commitment to showcasing exclusive, local artistry. In a refreshing departure from traditional galleries, 16th Cross Pearson creates opportunities for artists who have not previously exhibited their work, fostering an inclusive, supportive environment.
As Birmingham continues to evolve, 16th Cross Pearson Wearable Art Gallery stands as a beacon of creativity and hope, proving that with faith, collaboration, and hard work, local artists can find a space to thrive. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to explore what Birmingham’s emerging artists have to offer by visiting this new hub for wearable art.
