Alicia’s Coffee aims to provide a welcoming space for all and contributes to the revitalization efforts of the downtown area.
If you find yourself wandering around the lively downtown streets of Birmingham, there’s a fresh spot where coffee lovers can gather, connect, and sip on delicious brews. Welcome to Alicia’s Coffee, the new Black-owned business that officially opened its doors on February 25, 2025, at the historic A.G. Gaston Motel. This trendy coffee shop is more than just a place to get your caffeine fix – it embodies a movement of community connection and service.
Founded by the dynamic duo, Naimah Alicia Elmore and Rashad Harrell, Alicia’s Coffee is built on the philosophy that “Coffee is a connection.” This heartfelt guiding principle reflects their commitment to forging relationships and giving back to the surrounding community. Since its inception in 2020, the business has prioritized organic and responsibly sourced coffee, promising customers not only a delightful taste but also a strong sense of community impact.
In her own words, Naimah expressed how honored she feels to be a part of revitalizing the downtown area. The coffee shop was specifically selected to operate within the historic A.G. Gaston Motel, a landmark that played an important role in Birmingham’s civil rights history. By establishing Alicia’s Coffee here, the founders hope to provide a safe and healing space welcome to people of all ages and backgrounds.
The menu at Alicia’s Coffee boasts a variety of delightful options that go beyond typical coffee offerings. Patrons can indulge in three distinct signature coffee blends: Brazilian, Costa Rican, and Colombian. The shop serves up everything from classic lattes to refreshing smoothies and soothing teas. You won’t want to miss their unique drink, the Room 30, which pays homage to the motel’s historical significance. Inspired by the “War Room” where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. strategized during the Birmingham movement, this innovative beverage mixes oat milk, two shots of espresso, and tangy raspberry syrups for an unforgettable flavor.
But what’s coffee without a little something sweet? Alicia’s Coffee puts an emphasis on supporting local talent, featuring pastries, muffins, and other baked goods from Amber’s Dessert, a beloved local African American baker. Whether you opt for a warm muffin or a decadent pastry, you’ll have many delightful treats to accompany your brew.
The grand opening of Alicia’s Coffee was met with excitement from countless community members, and Mayor Randall Woodfin recognized the coffee shop’s mission to serve the population well beyond just providing coffee. This commitment to community outreach contributes to the revitalization efforts at the historic A.G. Gaston Motel, a critical meeting site for civil rights leaders back in the day. The motel was built in 1954 and is now a testament to the brave individuals who fought for equality.
In recognition of the site’s importance, the City of Birmingham has allocated significant resources to revamp the motel, totaling more than $10 million in restoration efforts. On top of that, a generous $1.1 million grant from the Mellon Foundation has helped support the coffee shop and renovations. This level of investment has fostered an environment where local businesses can thrive.
As local leaders stress the importance of supporting Black-owned businesses, Alicia’s Coffee stands as a beacon of hope and a symbol of economic empowerment. Visitors can explore the restored dining area of the motel, which features a permanent exhibit dedicated to the remarkable life and legacy of Dr. A.G. Gaston, inspiring countless dreamers to rise and make a difference.
Alicia’s Coffee is all set to welcome guests every day from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., making it the perfect spot for your morning cuppa, afternoon pick-me-up, or a leisurely catch-up with friends. So, if you’re in Birmingham, why not drop by, grab a cuppa, and become part of a community that’s brewing connections one cup at a time?
