His outstanding performance in his first year led to him being recognized as the most outstanding freshman member by Alabama Magazine. Over the course of his 16-year tenure in the Legislature, he received several accolades, including being named the most ethical member in 1988 and most outstanding member in 1992 by his colleagues.
