If you were looking for an evening filled with stunning music and vibrant history, look no further than downtown Birmingham, Alabama. On December 5, the recently renovated Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, also known as the Carver Theatre, rolled out the red carpet for a truly special event. The Alabama Symphony Orchestra (ASO) graced the stage for their first performance at the historic venue since 1935, and boy, did they make it count!
In a night more captivating than a page out of a fairytale, the ASO presented the world premiere of a brand new work by the talented composer Brian Raphael Nabors, a proud graduate of Huffman High School. The evening was a delightful mix, featuring the Baroque beauty of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto and the charming compositions of Italian maestro Ottorino Respighi, including “Ancient Airs and Dances.”
Nabors, who is celebrated for his ability to weave classical traditions with modern influences, shared a special sentiment with the audience. He remarked that the evening was all about “two histories coming together, one of a symphonic nature and the other of jazz.” With roots in a family marked by the Civil Rights Movement and Jim Crow history, Nabors embodies a unique fusion of influences. “I grew up with jazz, but I’m also deeply connected to classical music,” he said, filling the venue with warmth and nostalgia.
For those curious about Nabors’ educational background, he’s not just any musician. He holds both a Doctor of Musical Arts and a Master of Music degree in Composition from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Under the guidance of talented instructors like Douglas Knehans, Ellen Ruth Harrison, and Miguel A. Roig-Francolí, he honed his craft to become the powerhouse he is today. But it all started much closer to home with his Bachelor of Music Theory & Composition earned from the School of the Arts at Samford University in Birmingham.
If you missed the mesmerizing concert, there’s more to look forward to. Nabors will be at Birmingham’s Ballard House on December 9, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. for an intimate conversation and listening session. This is a golden opportunity to engage with the composer and dive deeper into his artistic process!
The Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame has been making waves with its renovation, breathing new life into this iconic venue that has long been a cultural centerpiece for Birmingham’s rich musical history. Revitalizing the Carver Theatre isn’t just about preserving the past, it’s also about paving the way for exciting new musical endeavors and events that celebrate both jazz and classical traditions.
This stellar performance by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and the world premiere of Brian Raphael Nabors’ work is just a glimpse into the unexpected and delightful happenings that Birmingham has to offer. So gear up, stay tuned, and perhaps get ready for your own journey through the world of music, right here in the heart of Birmingham!
