Hoover Community Benefits from AHEPA’s Charitable Mission

In the heart of Hoover, Alabama, the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) stands out as a beacon of hope and support for the local community. Founded in 1922, AHEPA was created to assist Greek immigrants in assimilating into American society. Over the years, it has evolved into a mission-driven organization focused on community outreach, charity, and affordable housing nationwide, particularly through its vital initiatives right here in Birmingham.

AHEPA’s Commitment to Seniors

A significant aspect of AHEPA’s outreach is its commitment to senior living. In 1980, the organization founded AHEPA Senior Living (ASL), a nonprofit focused on developing and managing affordable senior housing across the country. Currently, Alabama hosts 18 senior properties, with two located in the Greater Birmingham Area. AHEPA 3, situated in Hoover, boasts 72 units and currently has a two-year waiting list for new residents.

The demand for affordable housing for seniors is growing. “If you’ve ever tried to help a senior in your life find a new place to live, you’ll know there’s more demand for affordable housing than supply,” said Ike Gulas, a longstanding leader in the AHEPA community. Gulas, who has dedicated over 40 years to the organization, explained that AHEPA’s mission extends beyond just providing a roof – it’s about creating a safe, supportive environment where seniors can maintain their independence.

Living with Dignity

AHEPA Senior Living’s properties, including AHEPA 3, are designed not only to meet the basic needs of residents but also to foster a sense of community and well-being. Each unit includes various amenities that provide residents with peace of mind. Furthermore, the facilities provide access to an onsite manager, maintenance person, and service coordinator, ensuring that help is always available.

“We focus on creating a compassionate, dignified space,” Gulas said. The organization’s commitment is evident in its motto: “To live independently as you age in place.” With Alabama home to nearly 25% of AHEPA’s senior living portfolio, the organization is genuinely making a difference in our community.

A Legacy of Giving Back

Ike Gulas credits his father, Alex Gulas, as a major influence in his community work. “He always taught me that if you are fortunate enough, you should give back to your community,” said Ike. This philosophy is deeply ingrained in AHEPA’s mission and activities. Under Ike’s leadership, AHEPA Senior Living has grown to become the second-largest developer and manager of HUD 202 affordable senior apartments in the nation. They are currently expanding their efforts, with two new properties in the works and multiple applications for additional sites pending.

In addition to providing housing, AHEPA Senior Living is responsible for contributing more than $10 million in charitable donations, much of which supports local initiatives in communities like Birmingham through various chapters.

Looking Ahead

As AHEPA looks to the future, its commitment to providing affordable, quality housing for seniors remains strong. The organization emphasizes the importance of community resources, such as gardens and social programs, that assist the well-being of their residents.

Community members are encouraged to engage with AHEPA and learn more about how the organization can assist individuals and families in need of affordable housing solutions.

For residents in Hoover and Birmingham, AHEPA’s mission continues to resonate, proving that collaboration and community outreach can lead to lasting positive change. Whether you’re looking for assistance or want to give back, AHEPA is here to make a difference in your life and your community.
