Birmingham’s Avondale Community to Welcome Inclusive Housing Project

Birmingham, Ala. – A new initiative aimed at providing disability-forward, inclusive, affordable housing is on the horizon for the Avondale neighborhood. Earlier this year, The Kelsey announced the acquisition of a site on 3rd Avenue South, setting in motion plans for a sustainable community designed to foster independence and quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

Brittney Harris, the Housing Development Manager for The Kelsey, underlined the project’s vision during a recent community meeting. “At The Kelsey, we have an inclusive model which allows those with and without disabilities to live together in one setting under an affordable roof,” she explained. “By providing a safe, inclusive community, we are promoting independence, dignity, and quality of life not just for the folks in the Avondale community but for the broader disability community across Birmingham.”

Project Overview and Features

The initial plans for the project suggest it will contain between 50 to 75 homes. In addition to housing, the development will feature community spaces for residents to engage in social events, along with access to various services and inclusive programming. Outdoor amenities will include seating areas, a sensory garden, and play spaces designed to enhance the quality of life for residents and their visitors.

Avondale was specifically selected for its accessibility. “One of the reasons we picked that site in Avondale was because of the access to amenities and transit. Many of our residents may not drive, so it is essential for them to be within walking distance of essential services,” Harris noted. With a bus stop located at the entrance of the site, residents will have direct access to health services, grocery stores, and other critical resources.

Embracing Community Growth

Harris shared excitement about the growth Avondale has experienced in recent years. “As a Birmingham native, I’ve been thrilled to witness the transformations in Avondale. This project allows us to contribute to that growth actively,” she added. Creating an inclusive housing development marks a significant milestone, as it is described as the first of its kind in Birmingham.

The Kelsey aims to set a strong precedent with this project, demonstrating the city’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Harris expressed hopes that this initiative will serve as a beacon of hope for individuals with disabilities and open doors for future developments across the city.

Community Engagement and Feedback

The proposal for this project came at the request of a local parent who reached out to The Kelsey after attending an event. The need for this type of housing was evident. “What we strive for at The Kelsey is to create homes for more—not just to enter a community without being invited first,” Harris explained.

In the past two years, The Kelsey has engaged with the Birmingham community to understand the local needs better. Harris mentioned discussions with city leaders, members of the local disability community, and Avondale residents, marking the transition into the initial phases of the project.

Looking Ahead

The timeline for the Avondale project is still in its early stages, and construction updates are forthcoming. “Our primary focus at this point is to share information about the project and build excitement within the community,” stated Harris. To facilitate ongoing communication, a community advisory group has been established, consisting of residents, members from the neighborhood association, local government, disability representatives, and caregivers.

For those interested in getting involved, joining a meeting, or seeking additional information, Harris has encouraged community members to reach out via email.

Conclusion

As Birmingham prepares to welcome this innovative housing project, the hope is to create a more inclusive environment that benefits all members of the community. This initiative is not only crucial for those with disabilities but also serves as a step toward a more connected and supportive neighborhood.
