Exciting Holiday Shopping Experience Awaits in Birmingham!

Birmingham is buzzing with excitement as the Birmingham Museum of Art gears up for a fantastic event this Sunday, December 1. If you’re looking to dive into a unique holiday shopping experience with a touch of local artistry, you won’t want to miss this!

What is Museum Store Sunday?

This special day is part of Museum Store Sunday, celebrated in museums across the country where you can find sweet discounts and perks on delightful items in their stores. Sophie Cosper, the Museum Shop Manager, shared her enthusiasm saying, “Museum Store Sunday is the perfect opportunity to support local artists and organizations while finding meaningful gifts for the holiday season.” Sounds like a win-win!

Meet Yogi Dada!

One of the highlights of the event will be local artist Yogi Dada. Who is she, you ask? Well, she’s a true creative force in Birmingham! Yogi Dada is a multidisciplinary artist whose talents shine through various mediums including painting, poetry, spoken word, and film. However, her “Dadas” are what really steal the show—these are her signature earrings that she lovingly refers to as writable artworks.

Shopping with a Smile

At the Museum, Yogi Dada will set up her brightly colored orange table, complete with a big smile and her infectious energy. She plans to sell her gorgeous earrings, art prints, and even those culturally inclusive greeting cards she created for Mawu Greetings. “I always have some music, and I might even have some candy!” she promised. Who wouldn’t want to check that out?

Representation Matters

For Yogi Dada, participating in this event is more than just about selling items—it’s about representation. As she points out, “I am very cognizant of visual representation in varied spaces.” Yogi believes that her presence as a Black woman artist adds much-needed diversity to an art world that’s often dominated by white culture.

Collaboration with Mawu Greetings

In addition to her own work, Yogi has collaborated with Mawu Greetings, a Fort Lauderdale-based company that highlights designs by Black and Brown artists. This partnership focuses on helping businesses authentically connect with diverse communities. Tresa Chambers, the founder of Mawu Greetings, explained, “Our designs center the perspective of the artists, which produces unique images that are miniature pieces of art.” What a meaningful way to promote diversity!

Birmingham’s Hidden Gems

Visitors can look forward to discovering incredible local talent! The event will showcase other talented local artists like Véro Vanblaere and will feature Indian textiles from J. Catma. Attendees are in for a treat with a local artist and vendor market, art activities, light bites, giveaways, and exclusive discounts on Museum Shop merchandise.

Sharing Experiences

While Yogi Dada hopes that you’ll pick up some gifts for that special someone, she wants to emphasize the joys of connecting. “I really enjoy meeting different people,” she shared, expressing how these interactions have enriched her journey as an artist. “It’s all about the experience! I have met so many amazing humans who valued our face-to-face engagement.”

Join the Fun!

So, if you’re in Birmingham this Sunday from 1 to 5 PM, head over to the Birmingham Museum of Art, located at 2000 Rev. Abraham Woods, Jr. Blvd. You won’t only be crossing names off your holiday shopping list but also supporting local artists and bringing home some one-of-a-kind treasures!
