Birmingham Buzz: A Night of Celebration for Alabama and Japan!
On a delightful evening in Birmingham, the warm ties between Alabama and Japan took center stage at the annual event hosted by the Japan-America Society of Alabama (JASA). The 2024 Annual Dinner and Business Forum, held at the beautiful Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa, showcased significant developments in the flourishing economic relationship between these two regions.
A Toast to Partnerships
The night kicked off with a formal dinner where business leaders, government officials, and guests connected over their shared interest in deepening ties between Japan and Alabama. The atmosphere was electric as everyone celebrated achievements while looking ahead to what the future holds. And who took to the podium to share some wisdom? None other than Camille Dawson, deputy assistant secretary for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. Her keynote speech shed light on Japan’s crucial role on the global stage and reinforced the necessity of maintaining strong U.S.-Japan relations.
Honoring Companies Making a Difference
During the evening, six remarkable Japanese companies expanding their operations in Alabama were honored for their contributions to the state’s economy. Operating in industries like automotive and manufacturing, these companies are vital players in driving economic growth across the state. Since 2015, Japanese companies have announced plans for nearly $5 billion in new investments and commitments to create over 8,000 jobs in Alabama, according to the Alabama Department of Commerce. Ellen McNair, Alabama’s Secretary of Commerce, highlighted how Japanese businesses have played an essential role in the state’s economic success.
“With more than 80 Japanese companies operating here, their impact extends beyond investments,” McNair stated. “They deliver high-quality jobs and innovative technologies, helping to ensure that Alabama remains a competitive destination in the global market.” What a testament to the relationship!
Recognizing Legislative Efforts
The evening wasn’t just about businesses; it also recognized individuals making waves in fostering U.S.-Japan relations. State Representative Mike Shaw was awarded the prestigious Samuel Ullman Award. Shaw was instrumental in spearheading the creation of the Alabama-Japan Legislative Exchange Group, aimed at enhancing cooperation between Alabama’s House of Representatives and Japanese businesses.
Delving Into Business Opportunities
The JASA Business Forum provided a platform for rich discussions around business opportunities in Alabama, with insights shared by notable figures such as Kiyoshi Tanigawa from Keidanren USA, Hiro Kagohashi from Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, and Mark Moore from Topre America Corp. Their perspectives shed light on navigating business landscapes, and future opportunities became the buzz of the evening.
A Generous Commitment to Friendship
Mark Jackson, honorary consul general of Japan in Alabama, pointed out the significance of the event, celebrating not only the 35th anniversary of JASA but also achievements reached in 2024. The statistics are staggering—over 50,000 Alabamians attended Japan-related events in the first ten months alone! Jackson expressed pride in Alabama’s collaboration with Japan and the importance of continued efforts between the two regions.
“Understanding Japan as an important partner to Alabama is essential for our leaders,” Jackson noted. “The economic impact of more than 80 Japanese companies is vital to a state of around 5 million people.”
The Road Ahead
As companies and individuals unite to strengthen this relationship, the future looks bright. Events like the JASA Annual Dinner and Business Forum foster not just good business practices but also long-lasting friendships and understanding between cultures.
As the night wrapped up, everyone left with a fuel of excitement for what’s to come, eagerly anticipating the next opportunities for Alabama and Japan to work hand-in-hand for mutual progress!
