Vestavia Hills, Alabama – The annual Haunt the Hills event proved to be a smashing success on Saturday, October 19, 2024, attracting between 2,500 and 3,000 attendees at Wald Park. Organized by the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce, the event transformed the park into a festive Halloween wonderland, filled with families dressed in costumes of all shapes and sizes, from princesses to superheroes.

Candy and Fun for Everyone

Families arrived starting at 4:30 p.m., eager to collect candy from more than 50 local businesses and organizations that set up tables around the park. The atmosphere was lively, with children dressed as cavemen, astronauts, and even a live bag of popcorn making the rounds to gather treats. As kids filled their bags, parents enjoyed watching their children’s excitement and snapping pictures of the festive costumes.

“It’s been a really fun time,” said Michelle Hawkins, president and CEO of the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce, reflecting on the day’s success. “Lots of kids and lots of candy from our vendors.”

Contests Galore

The fun didn’t stop at trick-or-treating. The event featured a variety of contests that highlighted the creative spirit of the community. Christopher Bissett took home the prize in the pumpkin carving contest, while a participant named Anastasiya won for the best pumpkin decoration. The highly anticipated costume contest also took place, with awards being presented across multiple age categories.

Parents and children gathered to cheer on their friends in the costume contest, showcasing elaborate outfits, some crafted at home and others bought at stores. It was clear that creativity, effort, and the Halloween spirit were in full swing.

Movies Under the Stars

As the sun set, families settled down on the lawn to watch the classic movie “Halloweentown,” which began at 6:30 p.m. The community vibe was palpable as neighbors shared blankets and snacks, enjoying the evening together under the clear night sky. This closing activity offered a perfect ending to a day filled with celebration.

Community Spirit on Display

The Haunt the Hills event is not just about costumes and candy; it also fosters community engagement and supports local businesses. Each year, the Chamber of Commerce brings this event to life, encouraging local entrepreneurs to participate and connect with families in the area.

As families packed up their goodies and headed home, the sense of joy and community lingered in the air. The event has become a staple in the Vestavia Hills calendar, marking the arrival of the fall season and providing a safe and fun environment for children of all ages.

With the success of this year’s Haunt the Hills, the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce is sure to continue this festive tradition, creating memories for families for years to come.
