Birmingham Gears Up for November Election: A New Probate Judge on the Ballot

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — As November draws near, residents of Jefferson County are preparing to cast their votes for a crucial position within the local government. The upcoming general election on November 5th will see voters deciding who will take on the role of probate judge for place 1. Candidates vying for the position are John Amari, a Republican, and Yashiba Blanchard, a Democrat.

The Significance of the Probate Judge Role

The probate judge plays an essential role in the county’s judicial system. This position supervises a wide range of cases, including adoptions, mental health issues, and the settling of estates. Furthermore, the probate judge serves as the chief election officer for Jefferson County, overseeing the integrity and fairness of elections. Both candidates emphasize the importance of this responsibility.

Candidates’ Perspectives on Fair Elections

John Amari expressed his commitment to ensuring fair elections, stating, “I think the one thing everyone agrees on is that they want fair elections, and so I think it’s important to have someone who’s organized, someone who is experienced, and someone who is going to make sure those elections are fair.”

Yashiba Blanchard echoed these sentiments, highlighting her dedication to educating the public on their voting rights. “I want to make sure there are fair elections, and everyone is educated as to their voting rights. And I will say I am the perfect candidate for that position,” Blanchard said.

Experience in the Courtroom

Experience is a significant factor in this race. Blanchard, who has served as both a special district court judge and a special circuit court judge, believes her varied background provides a unique perspective on the issues facing the probate court. “I’ve seen the bench from both sides. I’ve seen a bench as a lawyer defending my clients on this side and as a judge, I have a bigger platform to get out there and help all the individuals in Jefferson County,” she stated.

Amari also brings nearly two decades of experience in probate court, focusing on issues like conservatorship and guardianship. “You know, these are the things I’ve been helping families with in Jefferson County now almost 2 decades, and I’m very experienced in probate court,” Amari said. He expressed his enthusiasm for using his judicial experience to assist families in need.

A Look Ahead to Election Day

With both candidates emphasizing their qualifications and commitment to public service, it is clear that their campaign strategies will depend on resonating with the voters of Jefferson County. The probate judge election is just one of many local contests on the ballot, but its impact on the community is profound.

Birmingham residents are encouraged to educate themselves on the candidates and their platforms ahead of the election. As we get closer to November 5th, more information will be shared to help voters make informed decisions.
