Birmingham is buzzing with activity as September brought a wave of exciting new businesses to the Magic City. As we move into October, residents are looking forward to new offerings while also reflecting on the local establishments that have recently closed.
New Arrivals in the City
One of the most talked-about openings this month is Sloan’s, a cocktail bar specializing in an elevated bourbon experience. Located on 2nd Avenue North, Sloan’s officially opened its doors on September 24. The establishment is the creation of the team behind local favorites Bistro 218 and Bocca Ristoriante. The ambiance at Sloan’s is designed to be both refined and welcoming, making it a suitable spot for both whiskey connoisseurs and casual drinkers eager to learn more about the world of bourbon.
On a different front, Speedway has opened a new all-purpose travel center. This convenience store, situated at the busy Finley Boulevard exit off I-65, operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Residents now have access to late-night snacks and essential travel needs at all hours.
New dining options are also expanding in Birmingham. Restaurateurs Kelli Caulfield and London Jackson are preparing to open a new elevated sports bar named Do Not Disturb in Homewood. This venue will be located just off Lakeshore Parkway, near Lowe’s, and aims to provide a vibrant atmosphere for sports enthusiasts to cheer on their favorite teams while enjoying creative dishes and drinks tailored for a laid-back yet lively experience.
Additionally, there is exciting news on the banking front as Chase Bank plans to open a new branch in Mountain Brook next year. This new location will be part of the Lane Parke development, situated at the former site of local real estate firm Ray & Poynor, which suffered significant fire damage in 2022.
Saying Goodbye to Beloved Local Businesses
In Hoover, Wild Roast Cafe has announced its closure after nearly six successful years. The local favorite, celebrated as Hoover’s Best Coffee in 2023, specialized in craft lattes alongside tasty breakfast and lunch options. Coffee lovers are encouraged to stop by before it becomes just another memory of Birmingham’s culinary scene.
Another significant farewell is the well-loved Ghost Train Brewing Company. This local brewery, established in 2014 and known for its iconic craft beers, has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, signaling its permanent closure. Local fans will certainly miss favorites like the Kaleidoscope Kettle Sour and Gulf Coast IPA.
Additionally, Urban Smoke Bar & Grill has closed its location in Fairfield. However, owner Draper Mason is optimistic and is currently searching for a new space to reopen this popular eatery and sports hangout.
