Mountain Brook Gears Up for Bolt For Breast Cancer 5K

MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL — On Sunday, October 29, community members are invited to lace up their sneakers for the Bolt For Breast Cancer 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run, a vital fundraising event supporting local breast cancer research. The event will take place in the beautiful suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, and aims to raise both awareness and funds for breast cancer initiatives conducted within the Yellowhammer state.

All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA), helping to drive significant advancements in breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. According to the BCRFA, every dollar raised stays in Alabama, making a direct impact locally while contributing to a global movement for better breast cancer outcomes.

A Month of Solidarity

October commemorates National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when businesses and organizations throughout Alabama join together to paint the state pink. This collaboration embodies a spirit of solidarity, empowerment, and enlightenment aimed at supporting research and raising awareness about this critical health issue.

Over 20 local businesses, including car dealerships, schools, banks, and real estate brokerages, are stepping up to make a significant contribution. These partnerships are crucial as they help fund life-saving research initiatives. “The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama is dedicated to supporting local research and raising awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” stated BCRFA President and CEO Beth Davis.

Funding for the Future

In 2023 alone, the BCRFA invested over $1.25 million in 35 innovative research projects across seven institutes based in Alabama. This funding has proven beneficial, as breast cancer death rates in the country are declining thanks to advancements attributed to significant investments in research and earlier detection methods.

To honor the survivors and the memories of those lost to breast cancer, Davis encourages community members to participate and unite in this fight against the disease, which affects one in eight women and one in 833 men in the United States. In Alabama specifically, an estimated 4,000 women will receive a breast cancer diagnosis this year, with around 720 lives lost to the disease.

Encouraging Participation

Alongside the main event, the BCRFA is eager to partner with individuals who want to contribute to the cause actively. Those interested can take part in various community events or support the organization through donations. Furthermore, they can purchase a Breast Cancer Research license plate, pick up pink apparel at the BCRFA shop, or organize a fundraising event to support breast cancer research.

As the community comes together to support this essential cause, the BCRFA reminds everyone that each small effort contributes to the broader fight against breast cancer. Research shows that in the past 30 years, the survival rates for breast cancer patients have dramatically improved; whereas four out of five patients did not survive the illness three decades ago, now four out of five patients can successfully overcome the disease.

Join the Movement

Local participation in events such as the Bolt For Breast Cancer 5K not only helps raise funds but also fosters a strong community spirit dedicated to supporting those affected by breast cancer. Together, by walking, running, or simply getting involved, residents of Mountain Brook can honor the survivors, remember those we’ve lost, and contribute to the ongoing fight against this devastating disease.

For more information about how to participate in the Bolt For Breast Cancer 5K and join the movement, residents are encouraged to reach out to local organizers or visit the BCRFA website.
