Birmingham Community Leader Inspires Local Youth Through Volunteering
Birmingham, AL – In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Kamryn Bendolph, a data analyst from Brasfield & Gorrie, is making an impact in the lives of local middle school students by volunteering with the J. Mason Davis Leadership Society and the United Way of Central Alabama. Originally from Huntsville, Alabama, Kamryn’s path towards volunteering began unexpectedly when a coworker invited her to join an event aimed at empowering young African Americans.
A New Journey Begins
After graduating from Birmingham-Southern College, where she ran track, and earning her MBA from UAB, Kamryn wasn’t initially looking for volunteer opportunities. However, her interest piqued when a coworker, Daphne, introduced her to the J. Mason Davis Leadership Society. This organization is dedicated to connecting African American change makers, fostering diversity and promoting opportunities in Birmingham.
The society recently hosted a business etiquette workshop attended by around 50 middle school students. During the event, nine adult volunteers shared their experiences and insights on professional expectations, effectively preparing the students for the realities of the business world.
Reading to Inspire
Kamryn’s involvement with United Way also included a heartwarming initiative where she read to K-2 students at a local elementary school. Each child received a picture book, which they enjoyed as Kamryn engaged them in a discussion about their dreams and future careers.
“Kids want to learn and love being exposed to different people,” said Kamryn. “They want to see people who look like them and find out what they’re doing with their lives. That way, when they get older, they can say, ‘if she can do it, I can do it too.’”
Bridging the Gap
Kamryn’s experiences volunteering have opened her eyes to the various needs within her community. Reflecting on her own upbringing, she noted that the kind of business etiquette training she offered during the workshop wasn’t something she had access to as a child.
“There were a lot of things I had to learn by watching. By volunteering, I’m able to provide that kind of guidance to kids today,” she emphasized. “I’m a Black girl in a predominantly white company, and I can make a name for myself. So can they. It’s about staying true to yourself and working hard.”
A Call to Action
Kamryn encourages others, regardless of age, to get involved in their communities and seek out volunteer opportunities. “Do it!” she enthusiastically exclaimed. “United Way of Central Alabama has allowed me to meet amazing people and get to know my community better. It’s a chance to form friendships and connections that I wouldn’t have made otherwise, especially since I’m not originally from Birmingham.”
She also noted the wide range of opportunities available through organizations like United Way, emphasizing that there truly is something for everyone. “If you’re looking to give back, there are so many ways to be a part of something meaningful,” Kamryn said.
As Kamryn continues to influence the lives of these young students, her commitment to service exemplifies the impact one individual can have. Her story is a reminder of the importance of community engagement and the joy that comes from helping others grow and succeed.
