Birmingham Community in Shock After Murder of Local Woman

Birmingham, AL — The city of Birmingham is grappling with the tragic news of the murder of a young woman, Maria Juan, 27, who was found dead in an apartment on September 20, 2024. The body was discovered in the Hillside apartment complex located at 1521 17th Street South in the community of Glen Iris.

Authorities were alerted to the situation after family members reported Juan missing earlier that day. She was last seen around 8 p.m. on Thursday on the Southside of Birmingham. Concerned relatives reached out to the police when they had not heard from her since her last known appearance.

As the sun began to set on Friday afternoon, Birmingham police officers conducted a welfare check at the apartment complex and found Juan unresponsive. The Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service arrived shortly afterward and pronounced her dead at the scene, prompting an investigation by the Special Victims Unit.

Investigation Underway

Police suspect that foul play was involved in her death, though specific details surrounding her demise have not been disclosed yet. An autopsy will be conducted by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office to determine the exact cause of death.

As part of the ongoing investigation, officers gathered testimony from individuals who were in Juan’s company on the night she went missing. This led to the detention of a man who is described as a former romantic partner of Juan. The man is currently held in the Birmingham City Jail on a 48-hour extension during which formal charges for murder may be filed against him.

Community and Family Reactions

The murder has raised alarms within the Birmingham community, with many expressing their shock at such a tragic event. Family members have been informed of the situation and are understandably devastated. The loss of Juan marks a significant point in 2024, as she becomes the 118th homicide victim in the city this year.

Across Jefferson County, the homicide rates have also spiked, totaling 150 homicides so far, which includes both justified homicides and cases from previous years that have only recently come to light in 2024.

Authorities are appealing to the public for any additional information that may assist in their investigation into Maria Juan’s death. They urge anyone with knowledge to contact police investigators at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
