Who Killed Maurice Turner? Surveillance Video Captures SUV Fleeing Crime Scene in Birmingham
Searching for the Killers
The manhunt is ongoing for the shooter or shooters responsible for the death of a 52-year-old man in his apartment in the Birmingham neighborhood of College Hills last month. On Wednesday, Birmingham police circulated surveillance footage of an SUV fleeing the crime scene, hoping it may lead to someone recognizing the vehicle or providing useful information that could help to solve the case.
Maurice Turner was found dead on July 17 in the kitchen of his home. Birmingham’s North Precinct officers responded to a Shot Spotter notification just after 1:30 a.m. in the 800 block of Jasper Road after the gunfire detection system recorded 10 shots fired in the vicinity.
Details of the Crime
Sgt. LaQuitta Wade elaborated on the event, stating that upon reaching the location, officers found no immediate cause for concern or any individuals in distress. However, by 1:51 a.m., the police received a distressed call regarding a person being shot. Both police and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service were dispatched to the scene and confirmed Turner’s death at 2:03 a.m.
The crime appears to be committed by shooter(s) who fired through the back door of Turner’s ground-floor apartment. The bullets struck and passed straight through the residence leaving puncture marks in the front windows. Turner was in his kitchen at the time. His roommate, who was present inside his room during the incident, described hearing noise similar to fireworks but did not witness the actual shooting.
Aftermath and Appeal for Information
The death of Maurice Turner has caused profound grief for his loved ones. Turner was a father of three – two daughters and a son. DeQuacha Fields, his sister, expressed her family’s distress stating, “We can’t wrap our minds around it. We don’t understand why someone would want to do this to our brother.”
As authorities continue their search for the killer(s), they are urging the public to come forward with any relevant information.
