Over 3,000 Birmingham City School Students Still Not Registered
State Funding at Stake with Low Registration Numbers
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The new academic year in Birmingham City Schools began this Monday, but it seems not all students are yet ready to hit the books. As reported by school officials, more than 3,400 students are yet to be registered for attendance.
“All we know is they haven’t showed up yet, and we want them to show up,” said Sherrel Stewart, a representative of the Birmingham City School community. This situation isn’t just a concern for the students themselves, but it could also affect the level of state funds received by the schools since the funding is based on the number of registered students.
In the words of Stewart, “That count begins after Labor Day, so leading up to Labor Day we’re trying to make sure everyone is enrolled.”
Registration Hurdles
Birmingham resident, Bobby Jackson, is a parent working hard to ensure the registration process for his four children is completed. He pointed out the process is overall smooth and that registration can be done through the Birmingham City Schools website.
“Sometimes you have a little problem logging in and stuff like that, but the school is pretty good at getting us the information for the stuff we need,” he added.
Assistance for Registration
The school district is not just sitting idle in this critical period. It has trained staff and English translators at hand to ensure every student can get registered without difficulties.
“We want those families to come on in for whatever reason you may have had a delay, but I can assure you we have the resources to assist you so all you need to do is really get them there,” Stewart said.
In an attempt to attract more students, the school district is offering free breakfast and lunch to all registered students.
Impact of Delayed Registration
Teachers emphasize the urgency of completing registrations, indicating even a few days of delay can severely impact a student’s learning due to potential disruptions in classroom arrangements and curriculum planning.
Online registration is currently open and can be accessed on the district’s official website. Officials are urging families to take advantage of this facility to avoid any further delays.
