In a disturbing altercation on Saturday night, a 21-year-old transient, Ty Austin Bell, was shot by a security guard following an assault incident in downtown Birmingham. Subsequently, Bell is now in Jefferson County Jail after being charged with second degree assault, with his bond set at $10,000.
The incident took place around 11:16 p.m. Saturday in the 700 block of Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard. Both Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies and Birmingham police swiftly responded, with the latter securing the scene by the time deputies arrived. Upon reaching the location, authorities found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body.
Bell was rushed to UAB Hospital with injuries that were deemed non-life-threatening. Following his release, he was transported and booked into the Jefferson County Jail at around 6:33 a.m. Sunday.
Detailing the chain of events leading to the shooting, Sheriff’s spokesman Henry Irby reported that a member of the Jefferson County Courthouse Security Team first encountered Bell in the parking area of the 2121 Building. The guard continued to follow Bell as he proceeded to the rear of the parking garage and into an alley.
An argument ensued between the two, rapidly escalating into a physical assault. Irby noted that the security guard, who had sustained injuries to his face from the attack, retaliated by firing a shot that struck Bell. At the time of the incident, Bell was under guard at UAB Hospital.
As per court records, Bell now stands charged with second-degree assault. Pending a court hearing with a date yet to be determined, he remains in custody at the Jefferson County Jail. The investigation into the incident continues, as authorities work to compile a full account of the events on Saturday night. The security guard involved in the shooting has been lauded for his quick reaction in the face of danger, potentially averting further harm.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks security personnel face in the line of their work, calling for continued support and protective measures for those serving in similar roles. While Bell’s motives remain unclear, the swift actions of law enforcement ensured minimal fallout and public safety.
