16th Cross Pearson, Alabama’s first-ever black-owned wearable art gallery, has opened its doors to the public in Downtown Birmingham. The aim of this unique establishment is to welcome all art enthusiasts to experience and appreciate masterpieces designed by local talent.
The idea behind launching 16th Cross Pearson stemmed from its founder Tanya Pugh-Johnson, who felt the need to blur the boundaries between art and fashion. As a child, Tanya, a Navy veteran and a University of Alabama at Birmingham graduate, had similar influences towards fashion.
Tanya imagines the human body as a canvas for artwork, a creative streak she discovered while observing the eccentric styles at the Met Gala. The event sparked the idea of initiating an art gallery, through which she could help local artists showcase their innovation and creativity.
According to Tanya, the creations from 16th Cross Pearson will “maximize the industry so local creators can show what they can do.” Given the exclusivity of products that cannot be found elsewhere, Tanya ensures her gallery’s items are pure representations of the artists’ creativity.
16th Cross Pearson is not your average art gallery. Visitors have the unique opportunity to wear the exquisite creations by local artists. The gallery houses a rich display of handcrafted decor, colorful artworks, and dresses boasting flamboyant artistic expressions.
Additionally, the gallery offers commissioned work from six distinctive artists specialized in diverse fields.
The grand opening of the 16th Cross Pearson gallery is a crucial milestone for Birmingham’s local art scene. For those ready to immerse in the vibrant display of art in the city’s newest art gallery, the address is 2215 1st Ave N Suite 200, Birmingham, AL 35203. Visitors can feast their eyes on the masterpieces Wednesday through Friday from 11 am to 6 pm and on weekends from 11 am to 3 pm.
16th Cross Pearson is truly set to redefine the intersection of art and fashion in Birmingham and promote local talent to a broader audience.
